Title: Major problem!!!!!
Post by: [GiT]Hellrazer on January 25, 2005, 12:22:05 PM
Tried to switch on the PC this morning. And am getting nothing. It starts with a series of 5 short beeps and then nothing.Ive tried this about 20 times and the same thing all the time.
5 short beeps seem to indicate a CPU failure or could it be motherboard failure?
Any way of testing this without a spare cpu?I cant even get into the bios to set it back to defaults as the monitor wont switch on.
Any ideas anyone?

Check your BIOS and then look it up...

Sorry looks like you did... Its strange it work fine till you shut it down last night and now aint working would it ever be the HeatSink fan causing it?

I dunno Kayos---5 short beeps says CPU failure. Its under warranty so Ive ordered the same one again under the warranty.
Hope its not a mobo failure Im looking at.

Then again the pc would never start up when it was really cold so hopefully it was a faulty cpu all along.Ill give it a try tonight and see what happens.

Too cold? Sounds more like an overheating issue. 5 beeps does sound like a CPU problem, as the beeping comes form the motherboard.

Have you tried to turn it on since you came back from the LAN?  If not the problem might be a result of vibration during transport and the CPU might just need re-seating (popping out of it's socket and back in again)

Bosco---I wasnt at the lan and the PC hasnt been touched in months.

But anyway guess what? The thing started up no bother 10minutes ago.Working away 100%.Im baffled.

Im leaning towards motherboard now and not cpu.Could be a hairline crack in the board which doesnt make contact when cold but once it heats up it expands and makes contact again. Its a wierd one.
Think Ill just order a new mobo and try that.
Like I said its all under warranty so I can probably try everything until I get it sorted.

I'd say you're spot on about the heat causing expansion in a bad solder joint.
