MEDIC!!!! PC DOWN
« on: August 20, 2014, 10:24:13 AM »
Well guys

its me the master of system problems here...  :|

after quitting dayz last nite the pc just died and i haven't been able to get it to boot since.

(just as im thinking here, dayz never closes right I hit exit and the program screen gos blue (not a bsod) I then have to use task manager to shut the process down.) soon after that my pc died.

anyways I removed the ram and re-seated it, worked once but loaded into windows and then it switched off after i was on the desktop for a few seconds.
I powered the pc on again and it booted half into the bios even though I never told it to it then stopped and switched off again.

also reseated the cmos and no joy.

I've noticed the keyboard and mouse are not lighting up as they do before the bios screen kicks in.
(I also tried a very old keyboard with the old style connection.)

all fans and lights are working and power is being supplied to a usb harddrive when plugged in.

Could the power supply be dead, but just able to power the fans and usb?

Yes possibly, however if you think it is don't use it again, you could blow the whole lot.  I had a PSU go and take MOBO, CPU and RAM once, wasn't nice on the pocket.

ouch.

Borrow known good power supply to try and test it with that first.  If that's not the problem, keep using the good PSU and then simplify everything, boot it without anything plugged in, (get that external USB out of the equation), and start from there.

Have the case open and check for error LED's on the mobo

Listen for POST beeps and look up what they mean for your mobo online to help diagnose it.

Remove each stick of RAM in turn and test

Reseat the CPU

might be a BIOS problem, see if you can arrange to flash that.

let us know how you get on.

unplug your pc - make sure there is no power in it. (I know your not that silly bit its my disclaimer!!!)

its unlikely to be your PSU.  Its more likely your motherboard at a guestimate.   Just not in case, look at the CPU set and reseat it.

see if your bios has any diagnostics in it and try and get that to run.   It doesn't sound good for your motherboard tho :(
