Help!!!!!
« on: November 16, 2013, 06:47:36 PM »
Lads I need a bit of help.

I just ordered a nice 6 core Phenom and the seller fucked up.
I ordered a 95 watt version and got a 125 watt version.

My board is this one.
http://www.asrock.com/mb/NVIDIA/N68-S3%20UCC/
Limited to 4 gb ddr3.

So first question.
Anyone ever try to run a 125 watt cpu in a 95 watt board??

Next I have a spare board.
Its a Gigabyte
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3004#ov
Now this board will take my X6 @ 125 watts.
However it only takes ddr2 and not ddr3.

So next question.
Whats my best options here.

Use the Gigabyte with 16gb of ddr2 800 which I have sitting around or wait, return the cpu for a 95 watt one which will take weeks.
Id be lucky if Santa brought it in time.

Does ddr 2 even make much difference than ddr3?

The rest of my machine is new enough but my x3 435 Athlon is showing its age in BF4.

Radeon 6870
Fractal 750w power supply
4 Gb DDR3 1600mhz.

Really was hoping Id have the x6 running this weekend.

Don't think so. Form Googling it, undervolting has allowed people to use it (afterupdating to the newest BIOS), but you wouldn't be able to overclock it, and it seems stress testing it is very bad!

I'd advise getting a new mobo, but before doing so, check out the motherboards for the 125watt CPU's, as I think you'll have a limited selection that don't have many RAM slots (all the ones I saw in stock on newegg only had 2 RAM slots).

Perhaps if you post it back using tracked post, and gave the seller the tracking number, they may send you out the 95watt CPU, as it's their fuck-up?

Supports my x6 1100t and the newer FX range aswell as 32gb ddr3.

Can I get away with a windows 7 reinstall with a mobo change?

The Gigabyte one that you're going to use; is W7 on it atm, or are you using another mobo? If another mobo, try it :P however, you'll need to uninstall chipset drivers, install new ones, etc, possible driver conflicts (of hardware that is no longer there, etc), so a fresh W7 install may just be easier in the long run.

Right picked up a new mobo.

Got a Asrock 980 de3 that will take my x6 aswell as 32gb ram 4xddr3 slots. And gives me a bit of room for future proofing as it take the Piledrivers and Bulldozers too up to 140 watts.

I don't fancy a full reinstall of Windows so can I get away without?

sysprep is your friend...

=-=

Nice board. Haven't seen the "Serial Port: COM1" for a while; good to know that they're still producing boards with it. Also liking the two 6GB/s SATA ports; nice for the SSD!

Im all set.

Got my motherboard.8gb ddr3.6 core Amd and a nice new 128gb ssd.

So ssd--do I put it on sata 2 or 3?

I also want to dual boot windows 7 and 8...is 8 even worth it yet?

My copy of Windows 7 is not a legit one.Whats the best activator around now?

Is it still the daz loader?

Give it to me, I will test it for a couple of months and put it through it's paces to ensure it's good enough for you to use.

Sata 3

go Windows 8.1 and get used to it, it's not going away and it's grand once you let go of the older stuff, (it's not easy, but you can make your life easier once you have it set up the way you like it)

no idea about activators, haven't had to use one in ages...
